How to stop your phone overheating during long gaming sessions
Phones have no fans, so during a long session heat builds until the processor slows itself down. The game stutters, the battery drains faster, and over months the battery’s capacity suffers. The fixes are mostly habits.
While you play
- Don’t charge and play at the same time. Charging is the biggest single source of heat. Charge to a comfortable level first, then unplug.
- Take the case off for marathon sessions, especially thick protective cases.
- Lower brightness. The screen is one of the hottest components at full brightness.
- Cap the frame rate at what you actually need. 60fps draws far less power than 120fps.
- Play away from direct sunlight and off soft surfaces like beds and sofas that trap heat.
Settings that help
Turn off features you aren’t using — Bluetooth, location, and especially any screen recording. If the game offers a “power saving” graphics preset, it usually keeps temperatures lower with barely visible quality loss.
When to worry
A warm phone is normal. A phone that becomes uncomfortable to hold, shows a temperature warning, or shuts down should be given a break immediately — and if it happens often, the battery may be due for replacement.
