PS5 storage running out? Here’s how to manage it
The PS5’s internal drive is quick, but it is not large, and a handful of big titles can fill it. Before you start deleting games you love, work through these options.
Quick wins
- Delete what you’ve finished. Your saves stay in the cloud (with PlayStation Plus) or on the console, so a game can be reinstalled later without losing progress.
- Remove extra modes. Some games let you uninstall individual chunks — single-player campaign, language packs or high-resolution texture packs — from the game’s options menu.
- Move PS4 games to an external drive. A standard USB hard drive can store and run PS4 titles directly, which frees the fast internal drive for PS5 games.
The permanent fix: an M.2 SSD
The console has an expansion slot for a second NVMe SSD. Check the official requirements (speed, size and a heatsink) before buying, then installation is a few screws and a settings prompt. It’s the most cost-effective upgrade a PS5 owner can make, and games on it run exactly like games on the internal drive.
Keep it tidy
In Settings → Storage you can sort games by size and see what’s actually taking the space. Screenshot and video captures also add up quickly; clear out the media gallery every few months.
